The Association for the Development of West Athens was founded in 1989 following a joint decision of nine Municipalities, Agia Varvara, Agioi Anargyroi, Egaleo, Zefyri, Iliou, Kamateros, Peristeri, Petroupoli and Haidari, in order to address the hyperlocal and inter-municipal problems of the region for its ecological and sustainable development.
According to its founding Act, the main objectives of the Association are
- The promotion and investigation of inter-municipal cooperation,
- The cooperation with state agencies and the coordination of the action of all actors in the region,
- The spatial, urban, and environmental regeneration of West Athens,
- The fight against unemployment and the overall economic development of the region,
- Participation in trans-European networks of cities, etc.
In its twenty-year course so far, the Association exceeded by far the main goals of its creation. First, the volume of its projects and actions is impressive:
- Hundreds of environmental and urban regeneration projects in all municipalities,
- Protection from trespassers – Regeneration and promotion of the Poikilo Rocky Mountain,
- Protection and development of the park “Antonis Tritsis”,
- Training and employment programs for the unemployed and other vulnerable groups,
- Support for small and medium-sized enterprises.
- Structures and institutions for tackling unemployment,
- Actions for the development of culture
- Dozens of development studies on the problems of the region,
- Special development programs for the overall upgrading of the area,
- Participation of West Athens in important European Programs and Networks in the fields of Environment, Employment, Culture, Transport and Transport, New Technologies, Female Entrepreneurship, Roma, Repatriated, Foreigners, etc.
The Association has been appointed Intermediate Management Body of the Regional Operational Programme “Attica 2014-2020” of the Region of Attica and manages the operations of the approved Sustainable Development Strategy (S.D.S.) entitled “Intermunicipal Partnership for the Development of West Athens with the utilization of Integrated Territorial Investment (ITI)/Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS).
Within the framework of the Strategy of the SDS/ITI of West Athens, an emblematic, integrated and at the same time innovative Intervention for the Business Rehabilitation and Development of West Athens (Sharing Platform Economy Perspective / SPEP) is promoted.
Through this Intervention:
Synergies of innovative actions are pursued, which ensure varied but targeted impacts.

- In the local labour market
An advanced and original approach is being created, which will lead West Athens to the development milestone of 2030, with emphasis on:
- Industry 4.0
- Digital Development
- Green Transition
- Culture
- Social and Economic Resilience
Employment is improved, both through paid employment, and by increasing participation in new, youth and start-up entrepreneurship, and to strengthen entrepreneurship, attract investments and improve the business environment.
The total budget of the Intervention is 21.248.920 €, 29.27% is funded by ERDF and 70.73% by ESF.
